Part 7
“You shouldn’t have left yourself alone with him.” said Kento for the third time as they walked down the hall.
"Look Kento even if Sekhmet is the one who had poisoned me, he wouldn’t try to kill me right there with you guys in the next room. And besides which, I don’t believe his the one responsible. Shouldn’t you guys show a bit more loyalty to your fellow Royal Guard?” said Mia as she glanced at Kento and Rowen. Both felt a twinge of guilt from Mia’s question that showed itself on their faces.
Mia had told the ‘Daughters of Class’ that she had some ‘boring Princess business’ that she had to take care of. The truth was that she couldn’t stay a minute longer with them. She was thankful when they had helped distract Kento and Rowen, but she could barely listen to them talk without gagging.
She was actually going to Sage’s chamber to talk to him. She wanted to see if Sage had found any clue of who the killer was. When they finally reached the door to Sage’s room, Mia turned around and faced the others.
“Do you guys mind staying out here? I’d like to talk to him in private.” said Mia.
“Not at all.”
“Sure.”
Mia could feel herself growing angry at them. They didn’t give a second thought of her talking to Sage alone, but broke down the door when she wanted to talk to Sekhmet. She had her own suspicions of Sekhmet, but at least tried to keep them in control. Mia turned around and put her hand out.
*Knock knock*
“You may enter.” said Sage from inside.
Mia opened the door and quickly closed it behind her. Sage’s room was practically the opposite of Kento’s room when it came to organization. Sage had every object and furniture lined up and position in a proper place. Sage himself was sitting at the desk while reading a book. He looked up and smiled when he saw Mia. The smile itself took Mia by surprise a little. It was actually the first time Sage has smiled at her since she entered this world.
“Is it a good book?” asked Mia with a smile of her own.
“It’s a mystery novel, I was hoping it would give me some insight on our problem.”
“Speaking of which, have you found any useful info?”
“Nanko says the Princess died in the morning which indicates that she was giving the honey around that time. She had quite a taste for it, and would have drank it almost as soon as it was given to her.”
“So the killer could have very well watched her die if she drank it right after it was given.” said Mia.
Sage nod once.
“When I learned this, I tried to verify where every Royal Guard was that morning. So far I have witnesses who say Cye was at the Teaching Garden, Rowen was practicing his archery, and Kale was vomiting in a well after too much drinking.”
“So now we just have five suspects then.”
“Yes.”
“Ryo made a blood oath to me that he was going to make the killer pay. Can’t we take him off the suspect list? Kento as well. I just can’t see either of them as killers.”
“Even though it is extremely unlikely, Ryo could have just done the blood oath so you wouldn’t place suspicion on him. You would be surprise at how many honorless acts a man would do to get away with murder.” “How can you say that!? I don’t know what your relationship with these guys are, but the Sage in my world would never say that about Ryo. He has just a bit more respect for his friends.” said Mia with more anger than she could control.
Sage’s face once again took an extremely cold expression.
“Do you think I enjoy suspecting my friends. I want to give them the respect they deserve, but I have to consider anyone of the Royal Guard a suspect unless their is concrete evidence that he didn’t do it.”
Sage stood up and came up to Mia. His face was only a few inches from her and his cold stare made Mia shiver.
“I want to not suspect Kento and Ryo, but if I do that then I place you in danger. I need to do this not on emotions, but on facts. I promised you that I’d make sure your safe. If that means suspecting my friends then so be it.”
“I’m sorry... I had no right to criticize you. It won’t happen again.” said Mia in a small voice.
Sage’s stare became a bit more gentler and he backed off. “I also have some news from Sekhmet.” said Mia and she describe the conversation she had with Sekhmet only an hour ago.
“I’ll have Sekhmet’s laboratory checkout to see if his telling the truth. Dinner is in half an hour. I suggest you get ready.” said Sage as he sat back at his desk. Mia turned around and opened the door to the hall. Kento and Rowen were a few feet away.
“So what’s for dinner?” asked Mia as they walked to the Feast Chamber.
“Roast Hog.” said Kento who of course always knew what was for dinner.
The Feast Chamber was so far the largest room Mia has seen. Three large tables that were over twenty yards long stretched across the room. At the head of the middle table was a throne for Mia to sit in. This throne was made of oak wood and had carvings of animals and hunters on it.
*Ding ding*
The bell sound signaled everyone to take their seats.
Mia took her seat at the throne and the feast began.
Fifteen minutes later...
Kento watched as Dais poured Mia another glass of wine. Kento himself sat beside Mia on her left while Dais had somehow sneaked his way into sitting to her right. Right now Dais was telling the Princess how lovely she looked in her dress and making suggestions of what foods to sample first. It was obvious that he was flirting, which made the Princess blush somewhat. Kento felt a wave of jealousy at seeing the Princess giving Dais her attention. Kento tried to shake those feeling off.
I can’t get jealous or upset at her. Right now she doesn’t even know what are relationship use to be. Then again maybe we really didn’t have a relationship...
A month and a half ago in Kento’s room...
For the last five hours Kento was in heaven. The Princess knew exactly where to touch and squeeze. Now he was completely exhaust, but felt wonderful. He was completely naked with his whole body covered in a layer of sweat. He laid on his bed looking at the ceiling for a few minutes. Finally he rolled over to the Princess. He gave her a gentle hug and whispered the words he wanted to say for so long in her ear.
“I love you Princess.”
Her whole body seem to stiffen. She pushed him away and got out of bed. She slowly began to dress in her nightgown.
“Princess?” said Kento. He had expected some verbal response from what he had said.
After she was dressed, she slowly turned to Kento.
“I think we should end this now Sir Kento.”
“End what? You mean stop keeping this a secret.”
“No, Kento. I think we should end what we do in your bed every week. I’m sorry Kento, but I think you misunderstood what I was looking for when we did this.”
“Looking for?” said Kento as a sense of dread came over.
“Let us just pretend what has been happening in this room for the last two months hasn’t happened. Ok?” said the Princess. The tone she used was the same tone she used for the page when asking for her breakfast. Bored and showing no interest.
“But..but.. I love you! Doesn’t that mean something?” shouted Kento. He didn’t care if anyone heard him from outside.
“Kento let us not let this stop us from being friends. Let us just put this whole thing behind us. I think your simply confused right now.” said the Princess as if she was talking to a child.
“I..I...” stuttered Kento, unable to say more.
“Good-bye Sir Kento.”
After one final glance at him, the Princess left.
“NO!” shouted Kento as he punched his bed. His fist broke through the mattress and their was a shower of feathers...
Back at the present, in the Feast Room...
*Crack!*
Almost everyone in the room had stopped eating and looked in Kento’s direction. Kento looked down at his hand and realized that he had broken the wine glass in his hand by squeezing it too hard. He felt a gentle touch on his arm.
“Kento are you ok? You didn’t hurt yourself did you?”
Kento slowly looked up to see the face of the Princess.
I’ve wanted to try to win her love after that night, but I’m no good at flirting like Dais and Sage. All I can think of is telling her silly stories that sometimes made her smile. After that poison had taking her memory though, she has actually started talking to me and let me touch her again. But once her memory comes back again, she will treat me like before...
“I’m fine Princess.” said Kento as he brushed the glass fragments off his hand.
Several hours later...
Once again Mia was walking down the hallway to go to bed. Kento walked beside her telling a story of how he used the blades on his helmet to punch holes into a coconut. Kento couldn’t help, but notice that the Princess seemed to get more anxious as they came closer to her room. Mia was anxious because of the thought of Kento watching her while she slept.
I have to try to sleep with Kento watching me?!! That’s impossible! After finding out what my double and Kento had done, theirs no way I’ll be able to get to sleep with him looking at me every minute. Ugh!
They finally reached Mia’s door. Mia slowly opened it and then looked over at Kento.
“So um I guess your suppose to watch me while I sleep? Is it really necessary?”
Kento nod with a neutral expression on his face.
After they entered Mia’s room, Kento went over to the desk chair and sat in it.
Mia couldn’t help, but notice that Kento would be only ten feet away from her bed.
“You know Kento, I’m afraid I have something I have to tell you.”
“What is wrong Princess?” said Kento as he tried to guess what the Princess would say.
“Your a heavy breather.” said Mia simply.
“I’m a what?”
“A heavy breather. You breath too hard. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep with you that close to my bed. Your breathing will keep me awake. Get off the chair for a sec.”
Kento complied and stood up. Mia took the chair and moved it a good fifteen feet into the farthest corner.
“There much better.” said Mia with some satisfaction.
I’d prefer him to be a whole country away, but this will have to do. The less he is able to see of me while I sleep the better.
Kento went over to the corner and sat in the chair.
“Princess I really don’t think that we need to do this. I was able to sneak in here and watch you for half the night without you waking up before.”
“Um well... You see you did wake me up while I was sleeping, but I thought at the time that it was Ryo who was breathing. I just pretended to be asleep because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.” said Mia as she hope that the lie wasn’t too obvious.
“Oh.” said Kento as he looked slightly hurt.
Mia began to feel a twinge of guilt.
Oh no Mia. Don’t you start feeling sorry for him now because of those puppy dog eyes. Just get to bed and try to think of anything other than you and Kento...UGH!!!
Mia went into the dressing room and picked out the most ugly and plain night gown that she could find. Then she quickly dived into the bed and had the covers over her.
“Good night Kento.” said Mia as she tried to get rid of the images that ran through her mind.
“Good night my Princess.” said Kento from the corner as he studied Mia’s figure in the bed.
Is it good? huh? huh?
