Part 3

“I can’t believe that worked.” muttered Mia for the third time as she and Nanko ran down the sidewalk.

“Hey I’m a master of manipulation. Just don’t forget that we need to stick with that story when we meet your friends.”

“Ok, stop.” says Mia as they reach the parking lot. Mia could see her jeep parked nearby.

“Their classes should be over soon. We can just wait here for them to- OOF!” says Mia as she felt someone’s arms encircle her and hold her tightly. She felt the air leave her lungs as she was pressed hard against another body. Mia twisted her head a little bit and saw Ryo’s face inches from her own.

“Mia are you ok?”

“Was it the Dynasty?”

“What happened to you?”

Mia was now surrounded by the four other Ronins who looked at her with concern.

Mia said the first words that came to her head.

“Ouch, what’s poking me.”

Ryo began to turn red and a few snickers could be heard.

“Oh grow up, I mean over here.” says Mia as she pushed herself away from Ryo. She pointed to a black disk that was on Ryo’s chest.

“That’s just a badge from the EC Brothers. Tell us what happened to you and whose the kid?” says Sage.

Mia goes into a very detail and imaginative story of how she was locked in the library basement for three days. She explains how she survived on snicker bars and soda which was in Nanko’s bookbag. And finally how Mrs. Oslin set them free. At first the Ronins looked doubtful, but after Nanko confirmed it they believed her.

“And here I always thought Rowen would be the one to get locked up in a library.” says Sage which made Rowen roll his eyes.

“Uh-hum.” says Nanko while eyeing Mia.

“Uh one thing, Nanko sort of knows about Talpa and you guys being Ronins. I don’t know how, but he somehow squirmed the info out of me. When you’re by yourself that long with one person, you end up saying almost anything. But he swore wouldn’t tell anyone.” says Mia quickly.

“It’s not as if anyone would believe me.” says Nanko with a shrug. The Ronins gave him an appraised look as they tried to judge how trustworthy he was. Nanko returned their looks with a grin.

“Oh yeah, I hope you guys don’t mind, but I also agreed to let him stay with us during the winter. His an orphan and his foster family is going to France for the winter. Since he did supply me with the food that let me survive the last few days, I agreed to let him stay at my mansion.”

“Mia it’s your mansion, you can invite anyone you want.” says Ryo as he grew slightly less red.

“Yeah, it’ll be nice to have a kid around to idolize me since Yullie’s gone.” says Kento as he walks over to Nanko.

“Hey kid, were gonna have a great time. You can help me lift weights.” says Kento with a grin.

“Rrriiiggghhhtttt, and you can teach me how to become the never ending pit of hunger.” says Nanko with a grin of his own.

Kento’s grin turned into a frown while several more snickers could be heard this time.

“How did you know of Kento’s unnatural metabolism?” asked Cye as he tried to hide a smile.

“Mia told me all kinds of stuff about you guys, including how she spends an hour just to get Kento’s personal dinner ready.” says Nanko as he gave Mia a wink.

Kento gave Mia a glance as he looked slightly hurt.

Oh great! Now Nanko is going to use that excuse every time he teases someone. And it looks like Kento’s feelings are hurt. His probably uncomfortable with the thought that I would tell a stranger things like that about him.

“Nanko can I talk to you in private for a sec.” says Mia as she dragged Nanko away from the guys. Once they were almost out of sight from the guys she stopped and faced Nanko.

“What I do? What I do?” says Nanko as he attempted to look innocent.

“Listen Nanko, to these people your a complete stranger. You need to let them get to know you before you start in with your witty insults. And don’t go using me as an excuse for knowing their flaws. If you do that, then that means they think I told a complete stranger all about them. They’d feel that I have betrayed their trust. Do you understand?” says Mia as she glanced over at her friends.

“Yeah, I think so... It’s just going to be hard for me to treat them as I would treat strangers. I mean I know what these guys are like because I’ve hung around their doubles for so long.” says Nanko as he kicked some grass.

“But these people are not exactly like their doubles in your world Nanko. These people have their own personalities which are very different in some ways from the personalities of those doubles in the Guardian World...”

Wait a minute! Nanko said that the planet of that other world is called Guardian. And this college is called Guardian. Maybe it wasn’t coincidence that the spell took me to that certain world...

“Alright, let’s go back so you can apologize to Kento.” says Mia as she made a note to investigate further in that line of thinking.

“Come on guys, you need to come with us or none of us can get in.” says Kento as Mia and Nanko approached the group. He sounded like he was almost pleading as he was talking to Ryo and Rowen.

“Get in what?” asked Mia with curiosity.

“This fraternity called the EC Brothers invited us to join them. They gave a very friendly invitation. But all five of us have to show up in Kiwie woods tomorrow if we want in. If even one person doesn’t show up then the invitation is revoked.” says Sage as he gave Mia one of his world famous smiles.

“Yeah and I definitely want to see the invitation again, only Ryo and Rowen refuse to go.” says Kento while giving a glare at the two.

“I’m not really into fraternities.” says Rowen with a shrug.

“I’m not interested in joining a fraternity either. We haven’t even met these EC Brothers yet. Doesn’t it strike you as strange that they invite us when we haven’t even come face to face with them yet.” says Ryo.

Kento gritted his teeth and looked at the two with frustration.

Maybe I can help Kento out just this once. He looks like he really wants to do this. It’s the least I can do since he thinks that I blabbed about his appetite to a stranger.

“Come on guys, if this is Kento’s only chance to get into this EC Brothers group then I don’t think you should deny him that chance.” says Mia which brought about a few surprised glances. She wasn’t the type who liked fraternities. Kento gave her a grateful smile for her support.

“And besides, you can always quit if you don’t like it.” added in Nanko.

Ryo and Rowen looked at each other than turned to the others.

“Well I guess if you want us to..” says Ryo as he glanced at Mia.

“And once Kento gets in we can always quit then.” says Rowen.

“Great!” shouted Kento.

“Wow, he must really want to get into this fraternity.” says Mia as Kento began doing a victory punch.

“If you saw the welcome wagon you’d understand why.” says Sage with a knowing smile.

“Hey Mia, I heard about your lockup in the library jail.”

Mia recognized the voice belonging to Kathy that came from behind her. She quickly turned around to greet her.

“Hey Kathy! It’s great to s- eeekkkkkk!”

It wasn’t the sight of Kathy that caused Mia to ‘eek’, but what Kathy was holding. Five folders that became a foot long stack. She knew that the stack of folders could be only one thing.

“Here’s all the work you missed for the last three days. I asked the professors to give them to me so I could take them to you when you finally showed.” says Kathy as she handed over the stack of folders. Mia studied the folders as a sense of depression came over her.

Why couldn’t I have taken an Art major. But no, I had to be challenged. I had to be tested. There goes my weekend.

“I’ll carry those for you Mia.” said Ryo as he took the folders from Mia.

“Thanks Ryo.” said Mia as she fished for her car keys in her pocket.

“Oh hey Kento I’m sorry about saying that pit thing. Truth is Mia didn’t say anything like that about you. She actually said one of the greatest joys of her life was fixing you dinner.” said Nanko as he gave a sly look at Mia.

“Really?” asked Kento as he glanced at Mia.

Mia finally found her car keys and took them out.

“In fact, she wishes you would let her fix brunch and midnight snacks for you every- ouch!” cried Nanko as the keys hit his head.

“Oh I’m so sorry Nanko, they just slipped from my hand.” said Mia as she picked her keys up from the ground. Mia then gestured for everyone to get into the jeep. Ryo took the front seat while still holding her folders and the other Ronins and Nanko sat in the back while Nanko rubbed his head and grumbled. Kathy waved good bye as the jeep sped away.

The next day...

“Yeah! Score! Score!”

“Catch it! Catch it!”

It was a Saturday and the five Ronins were shouting at the T. V. as they watched the baseball game. Mia sighed as she started on another problem on her assignment. Meanwhile Nanko was playing with an old game system that Yullie used to play with when he lived in the mansion. Mia felt something rub her leg and looked down to see Whiteblaze staring at her. In his mouth was the morning newspaper.

Were the only people who uses a tiger to fetch the paper. It’s surprising that the mailman even comes near us.

Mia took the paper from Whiteblaze while giving him a good rub behind the ear. The headline was in large letters.

Dr. Zhang found dead in classroom!
His daughter missing!

Mia did a quick intake of breath as she recognized the name. It was her professor for computer class. She only saw him one time on the day she tried that spell to contact another world. According to the paper, he was found dead with several stab wounds in his chest and back.

“Hey guys, it’s almost noon.” says Sage as he tapped his watch.

“Alright, soon to be EC Brothers. Then it will be girls and parties!” said Kento as he put his badge back on.

“I’ve asked around and this EC fraternity doesn’t sound like your normal fraternity. They aren’t big in parties or getting drunk, but you get some great perks. You can move to the Condor building, which is said to actually have butlers and maids who serve you. I hear that theirs even a wine cellar in the basement. And the kind of girls who hang around them are usually models and cheerleaders.” says Cye as he got his own badge on.

“Boy do I believe in the models and cheerleaders part.” said Kento as he opened the door.

“Why do you say that?” asked Mia, slightly curious.

“No reason, his talking nonsense.” said Ryo quickly as he pushed Kento through the door.

“Well do you need a ride there?”

“It’s ok Mia, we can walk there. It’s not far.” says Sage as he gave her one last smile before leaving. Rowen and Cye waved good bye and then left as well.

Nanko finally got up from playing his game system.

“I thought they’d never leave. Now we can begin your-”

“Come on, we’re going to follow them.” says Mia as she gets her jacket.

“-training.” finished Nanko as he saw Mia walk out the door.

He quickly followed behind her. It was pretty easy to follow the Ronins. They had left plenty of prints in the grass as they walked through the woods.

“Any certain reason why we’re following them?” asked Nanko.

“I just want to find out more about this ‘welcome wagon’.” says Mia as she continued to follow the Ronin’s tracks. They told her they hadn’t met any EC Brothers yet, but when she asked who invited them they said it wasn’t important. Kento’s eyes always seemed to become glazed whenever the subject was brought up though while Rowen would turn a shade redder. And Ryo especially became flustered when she questioned him. Her curiosity was killing her and she just wanted to know why the guys were acting so strange when she asked who delivered the ‘invitation’.

Hope it’s keeping your interest.
